"Vice Society Claims Ransomware Attack on Australian Firefighters"

On December 15, 2022, a ransomware attack on an Australian firefighting and rescue service was carried out by Vice Society, a group notorious for targeting K-12 schools. The Fire Rescue Victoria (FVR) is responsible for 85 fire stations, most of which are located in the Melbourne metropolitan area. According to breach notification documents submitted to Australian authorities on January 6, ransomware impacted several FRV internal servers, including its email system. The incident resulted in the theft of large amounts of data from the servers, which Vice Society later placed on the dark web. The stolen data is believed to include the personal information of current and former employees, independent contractors, FRV secondees, job applicants, and other individuals. According to FRV, its highly trained personnel respond to fires, complex rescues, traffic accidents, emergency medical calls, and hazardous chemical spills throughout Australia and the world. Even though FVR is suffering a major Information Technology (IT) outage, emergency response has not been affected, and people should continue to dial the three-digit emergency code in case of an emergency. This article continues to discuss the Vice Society ransomware attack on the FVR organization and the history of the group behind the attack.
