"Virtual Kidnapping: AI Tools Are Enabling IRL Extortion Scams"

Cybercriminals have the resources to fake a real-life kidnapping and make it believable, thanks to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and publicly available data. At this year's Black Hat Europe conference, two Trend Micro researchers will discuss the real and emerging new trend of "virtual kidnapping," which may be the most frightening malicious application of AI yet. In a typical virtual kidnapping, attackers use cyber compromise, information gathered from social media or the dark web, and AI voice cloning software to realistically convince targets that their loved ones have gone missing. The end result can be nearly indistinguishable from the real thing, which is why more attackers are experimenting with advanced AI technology. This article continues to discuss the concept of virtual kidnapping and how it could be prevented.
