ABSTRACT

This briefing will focus on ransomware from a law enforcement perspective.  It will address current trends, provide insights into the cyber criminal underground, and discuss the consequences of breaking US laws.

BIOS

TYSON FOWLER a Special Agent (SA) with the FBI in the Atlanta Field Office, where he is part of a team of Agents and Analysts who conduct investigations in support of the FBI Cyber Division’s mission to identify, pursue, and defeat cyber adversaries.  With five years of experience investigating computer intrusions and over twelve years in law enforcement, he brings a unique perspective of the field.

Prior to the Atlanta Field Office, SA Fowler was in the El Paso field office.  SA Fowler is also a Bureau medic and a former crisis management cordinator.

SA Fowler has worked cases involving countries all over the world.

Prior to the Bureau, SA Fowler worked for the Orange County Sheriffs Office in Orlando, Florida.

CHAD HUNT is a Supervisory Special Agent (SSA) with the FBI in the Atlanta Field Office, where he leads a team of Agents and Analysts who conduct investigations in support of the FBI Cyber Division’s mission to identify, pursue, and defeat cyber adversaries.  With thirteen years of experience investigating computer intrusions, he brings an in-depth knowledge of the field.

During his time in the Atlanta Field Office, SSA Hunt was a member of the Evidence Response Team (ERT), and of the FBI’s Cyber Action Team (CAT), which is a rapid-response, globally deployable unit that brings in-depth cyber intrusion expertise and investigative skills to major cases of national importance.

In addition to his time at the Atlanta Field Office, SSA Hunt spent almost two years working at FBI Cyber Division Headquarters as a program manager.  In 2014 he was assigned to the US Embassy in Canberra, Australia for a one-year assignment as an Assistant Legal Attaché (ALAT), focusing on cyber matters in Australia, New Zealand, and multiple Pacific island in the region.

Prior to joining the FBI, he worked for twelve years in various capacities within the Information Technology industry.
